Day #081 – Benedict Cumberbatch Drawing

I’ve wanted to try drawing in off white (toned) paper for a while now so today I got around to buying some and trying it out. The idea is that a typical scene or drawing is mostly mid-tones with a few highlights whereas when you draw on white paper you end up having to do a ton of shading to get rid of the default white colour of the paper whereas on a neutral mid-tone paper you can put in the shadows and a few highlights and the paper makes up the bulk of the shading for you.

I also bought a white pastel stick to use on the paper to capture the highlights.

I set to work copying a picture of Benedict Cumberbatch as Sherlock that I found on Google Images. My highlights are a little rushed but I do think they look kind of neat and I’m fairly happy with the drawing as a whole. I only spent about 30 minutes on it and I think I’ve captured a reasonable likeness.

I bought 250 sheets of this paper so will probably be doing more toned-paper drawings in the coming days and months.
